Social Innovation Strategies for Ethical and Trustworthy AI: Engaging Global and Local Stakeholders

On September 24, 2024, Miriam Cabrita from SHINE 2Europe presented the social innovation framework utilized in the AI4HF project at the First Forum on Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, organized by the Lisbon Medical Sciences Society in Lisbon, Portugal.

Miriam outlined the project's three-level approach to multi-stakeholder engagement for fostering Trustworthy AI in heart failure treatment. The process begins with a comprehensive stakeholder analysis, identifying the key stakeholders in the context of each of the project’s clinical sites—Czech Republic, Peru, Spain, the Netherlands, and Tanzania. This analysis also examines stakeholder involvement across all stages of the AI development process, from initial clinical conceptualization to long-term usage monitoring in real-world settings.

The second level involves multi-stakeholder innovation sessions, where experts from various disciplines collaborate to identify requirements for technology development. These sessions also help gather requirements for designing pathways for the real-world implementation of AI tools aimed at enhancing heart failure treatment.

At the third level, iterative discussions with local stakeholders ensure that the proposed solutions are culturally relevant and aligned with the specific healthcare systems of each region. These face-to-face sessions help fine-tune the AI-driven tools for maximum impact and appropriateness.

The presentation was well-aligned with the event's focus on multidisciplinary collaboration, underscoring the necessity of cooperation between engineering, medicine, and social sciences for the successful deployment of ethical and impactful AI solutions in healthcare.
